Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Rusks
Soak up milk and bind the mixture, giving it body and a soft, set crumb.
Eggs
Set during baking to bind the mixture into a firm, sliceable savory bake.
Milk
Softens the crushed rusks and adds moisture so the bake stays tender.
Butter
Fat for frying the mushrooms and onion, adding richness and browning flavor.
Mushrooms
Main savory bulk; they release moisture and add earthy, umami flavor.

The step that matters

Frying the mushrooms and onion. Mushrooms release a lot of water. Frying them until the liquid evaporates and they brown concentrates their flavor and keeps the bake from becoming soggy.
