Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 400°F (200°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

Prepare

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).

  2. Whip the eggs well.

  3. Combine the eggs, milk, wheatmeal, oats, pepper, and salt to make a batter.

  4. Grease a shallow Yorkshire pudding tin with butter.

Bake

  1. Pour the batter into the tin and scatter a few bits of butter on top.

  2. Bake for 30 minutes until golden brown.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Eggs
Bind the batter and set the structure as the pudding bakes.
Milk
Hydrates the flour and adds moisture, helping the batter rise and turn tender.
Allinson fine wheatmeal
Provides the main flour structure that holds the risen batter together.
Allinson breakfast oats
Adds body and a slightly nutty texture to the batter.
Butter
Adds fat that helps the pudding brown and gives rich flavour.

The step that matters

Preheat the oven and grease the tin before pouring. A very hot oven and hot fat make the batter sizzle on contact, which is what lifts the pudding as it sets. A cold tin or cool oven lets the batter spread and rise poorly.
