Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Beef
Provides the main savory meat flavor and substance of the soup.
Flour
Thickens the broth slightly when mixed into the paste and simmered.
Egg
Helps bind the paste and adds richness to the thickened soup.

The step that matters

Pour the paste into the soup. A thin paste of flour and milk can clump if poured in lumps. Stirring it smooth before adding and keeping the soup simmering helps the flour disperse and thicken evenly.

Swap the cabbage

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (beef, onion, potato, carrot, parsnip, turnip, milk):

  1. Leekfits better
  2. Beetrootfits better
  3. Chivefits better
  4. Cabbagethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against beef, onion, potato, carrot, parsnip, turnip, milk. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
