Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 300°F (150°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

Prepare

  1. Preheat the oven to 300°F (150°C).

Make and bake the loaf

  1. In a large bowl, mix the minced beef, minced onion, rolled soda biscuits, milk, stavy or stock, beaten eggs, salt, poultry dressing, and pepper until well combined.

  2. Shape the mixture into a loaf and place it in a baking dish.

  3. Bake slowly for about 1½ hours, basting frequently.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Raw beef
Forms the bulk of the loaf and provides the meaty flavor and body.
Eggs
Bind the mixture so the loaf holds its shape when sliced.
Soda biscuits
Absorb liquid and help give the loaf a tender, structured crumb.
Milk
Adds moisture and softness to the loaf as it bakes.

The step that matters

Bake slowly and baste frequently. Low, slow heat lets the meat cook through gently and stay moist, while frequent basting adds moisture to the surface and prevents the top from drying out during the long bake.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (beef, biscuit, milk, egg, pepper):

  1. Potatofits better
  2. Capsicumfits better
