What each ingredient does

Sandwich loaf
Provides the structure that holds the layered fillings together.
Sweet butter
Adds richness and helps the toast brown and taste savoury.
Cooked chicken
Supplies the main savoury filling and most of the substance.
Bacon or ham
Adds salty, smoky flavour and fat to the layers.
Mayonnaise
Adds moisture and richness that bind the fillings.
Lettuce
Adds crisp texture and freshness against the soft fillings.

The step that matters

Toasting and buttering the bread. Toast must be golden and buttered so it stays crisp. Butter forms a fat barrier that slows moisture from the chicken and mayonnaise soaking into the bread.

Swap the lettuce

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, chicken, pepper, ham):

  1. Capsicumfits better

  4. Lettucethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against butter, chicken, pepper, ham. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
