Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Eggs
Bind the mixture and set it into a firm, sliceable custard when baked.
Bread crumbs
Absorb the milk and give the filling body and a soft, tender texture.
Milk
Moistens the bread crumbs and keeps the filling tender as it cooks.
Chicken
Provides the main protein and substance of the filling.
Butter
Adds richness and fat for flavour and a smooth texture.

The step that matters

Cover with buttered paper before baking. Eggs set into a custard when heated, and cooking them too hard makes them curdle and turn watery. The cover traps moisture and gentle heat so the timbales stay smooth and tender rather than dry or grainy.

Swap the parsley

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, bread, milk, chicken, egg, pepper):

  1. Parsleythe original
  2. Nutmegfits about as well
  3. Thymefits about as well
  4. Cinnamonfits about as well

Fit is the average pairing score against butter, bread, milk, chicken, egg, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
