Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Tomatoes
Provide the main flavor and liquid base of the salad.
Gelatin
Sets the tomato liquid into a firm, sliceable jelly as it chills.
Powdered sugar
Adds sweetness to balance the acidity of the tomatoes.
Mayonnaise
Adds richness and fat to contrast with the tart tomato jelly.

The step that matters

Soaking the gelatin. Gelatin must hydrate in cold water before it is added, so it dissolves evenly into the warm tomato mixture. Adding it dry or unsoaked can leave lumps and uneven setting.

Swap the tomato

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (sugar, gelatin, lettuce):

  1. Beetrootfits better
  2. Mustardfits better
  3. Cucumberfits better
  4. Tomatothe original

Fit is the average pairing score against sugar, gelatin, lettuce. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
