The pairs that carry this dish. Each one is judged two ways: how much their aromas overlap, and how often cooks already put them together.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Hops
Adds bitterness and aroma to the liquid while the potatoes boil.
Flour
Thickens the potato water into a starch base that feeds the fermentation.
Yeast
Converts sugars into carbon dioxide, making the mixture rise and turn bubbly.
Sugar
Provides food for the yeast, driving fermentation and carbon dioxide production.
Potatoes
Supply starch and body to the liquid, adding texture and nutrients for the yeast.

The step that matters

Adding the mashed potatoes to the lukewarm mixture. If the mixture is too hot, it can kill the yeast before fermentation begins. Waiting until it is lukewarm keeps the yeast alive so it can start working.

Swap the potato

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (hops, flour, sugar, ginger):

  1. Mustardfits better
  2. Arrowrootfits better
  3. Parsnipfits better
  4. Potatothe original

Fit is the average pairing score against hops, flour, sugar, ginger. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
