Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 350°F (175°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

Prepare

  1. Cut the cabbage into thin strips as for slaw.

Layer and bake

  1. Layer half of the cabbage in a baking dish.

  2. Sprinkle with pepper, salt, and bits of butter.

  3. Add a layer of bread crumbs.

  4. Repeat the layers, finishing with bread crumbs on top.

  5. Pour the sweet milk over the entire dish.

  6. Bake at 350°F (175°C) until the cabbage is tender.

What each ingredient does

Cabbage
Forms the bulk of the dish and becomes tender and soft as it bakes.
Bread crumbs
Form a crisp, golden topping and soak up some of the milk as the dish bakes.
Sweet milk
Moistens the layers and bakes into a creamy, custard-like sauce.
Butter
Adds richness and fat, helping the top brown and the flavor develop.
