Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Hops
Adds bitterness and aroma, and helps the mixture ferment and keep.
Potatoes
Provide starch and body to the liquid, feeding the yeast culture.
White sugar
Feeds the yeast, driving fermentation and rising.
Made yeast
Starts the fermentation that makes the mixture rise.

The step that matters

Stir in the yeast when lukewarm. If the liquid is too hot it can kill the yeast, and if it is cold fermentation will be slow. Lukewarm liquid keeps the yeast alive and active.

Swap the potato

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (hops, sugar):

  1. Mustardfits better
  2. Cucumberfits about as well
  3. Capsicumfits about as well
  4. Potatothe original

Fit is the average pairing score against hops, sugar. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
