Chocolate Cake

Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 300°F (150°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

  1. In a saucepan, combine ⅓ cup cake chocolate, 1 cup milk, ⅔ cup sugar, and the yolk of 1 egg. Boil slowly until dissolved, then add vanilla and set aside to cool.

  2. In a mixing bowl, cream together 1 cup sugar and ½ cup butter. Add ½ cup milk, 2 eggs, 2 cups flour, 1 teaspoon baking soda, and 2 teaspoons cream of tartar. Beat well.

  3. Add the cooled chocolate mixture to the batter and beat again.

  4. Pour the batter into a greased cake pan and bake at 300°F (150°C) until a toothpick comes out clean.
