Strawberry Short-cake

Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 400°F (200°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).

  2. Mix the baking powder into the cake batter and bake in a round or oblong tin.

  3. Once baked and slightly cooled, cover the cake with sweetened strawberries to a depth of 1 to 2 inches.

  4. Whip the egg whites until stiff, then gradually add the powdered sugar to make a meringue.

  5. Spread the meringue over the strawberries.

  6. When serving, place a large strawberry in the center of each piece.
