Lime-water to Make

Ingredients

Directions

Slake the lime

  1. Place 1 lb of unslaked lime in an earthen pot.

  2. Slowly add ½ pint of water, stirring with a stick as the lime slakes.

  3. Continue adding water gradually to prevent the lime from flying around.

Settle and store

  1. After 3-4 hours, when the lime has settled, pour off the clear liquid.

  2. Store the liquid in stoppered bottles away from light.

What each ingredient does

Unslaked lime
Reacts with water to form calcium hydroxide, which dissolves to make the clear lime water.

The step that matters

Adding the water slowly. Slaking lime releases a lot of heat and can violently spatter or throw up dry lime particles if water is added too quickly. Adding it gradually and stirring keeps the reaction controlled and the lime contained.
