Lime-water to Make
Ingredients
Directions
Prepare
Put the lime into an earthen pot.
Pour a little of the water onto the lime and stir with a stick.
Slake the lime
As the lime slakes, gradually add the remaining water. Add water slowly to prevent the lime from flying about.
After 3-4 hours, pour off the clear liquid into stoppered bottles away from light.

What each ingredient does
- Unslaked lime
- Reacts with water to form slaked lime, which dissolves to make the alkaline liquid.
- Water
- Slakes the lime and dissolves the resulting compound, producing the clear liquid.
The step that matters
Adding the water gradually. Slaking unslaked lime releases a lot of heat and can make it spatter violently. Adding water slowly keeps the reaction controlled and the lime from flying about.
