Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Calf’s-feet jelly
Adds body and gelatin, giving the punch a light, slightly thickened texture.
Sherry
Provides the main wine base and a rich, fortified sweetness.
Cognac brandy
Adds spirit strength and warm aromatic depth to the punch.
Old rum
Contributes spirit strength and molasses-like sweetness and aroma.
Lemons
Supply acidity and citrus oils from the rind and juice that balance the sweetness.

The step that matters

Set the jug on the hob for 20 minutes. Gentle heat after adding boiling water helps dissolve the jelly and extract flavor from the peel. Letting it boil hard or leaving it unattended risks a cloudy, unevenly flavored punch and loss of volatile aromatics.
