What each ingredient does

Finely ground coffee
Supplies the flavor compounds that the hot water extracts into the drink.

The step that matters

Pouring the boiling water gradually. Adding water slowly lets the grounds wet evenly and extract consistently. Pouring it all at once can soak some grounds unevenly and make the coffee taste harsh or weak in places.
