Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Chestnuts
Form the bulk of the stuffing and give it a soft, starchy body.
Butter
Adds fat and richness, carrying flavour and softening the mash.

The step that matters

Return the blanched chestnuts to water and boil until soft. Chestnuts must be cooked fully through to become tender; undercooked pieces stay firm and grainy, so the mash will not press smoothly through a colander or potato press.

Swap the parsley

The recipe marks parsley as optional. How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (chestnut, butter, pepper, bread):

  1. Sagefits about as well
  2. Parsleythe original
  3. Nutmegfits about as well
  4. Thymefits about as well

Fit is the average pairing score against chestnut, butter, pepper, bread. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
