Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Round of beef
Provides the main body and savory meaty flavor of the loaf.
Eggs
Bind the mixture together so it holds its loaf shape while baking.
Soda crackers
Absorb moisture and help bind the meat, giving a softer, more cohesive texture.
Suet
Adds fat that keeps the meat moist and tender during baking.

The step that matters

Shape the loaf firmly and bake until cooked through. Meat mixtures bound with egg can crumble if loosely packed, and the centre must reach a safe internal temperature to be fully cooked. Mixing well helps the binders distribute evenly through the meat.

Swap the sage

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (beef, egg, butter, pepper):

  1. Parsleyfits better
  2. Tarragonfits better
  3. Nutmegfits better
  4. Sagethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against beef, egg, butter, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
