What each ingredient does

Concord grapes
Provide the juice, flavor and color of the drink.
Loaf sugar
Adds sweetness and balances the tart grape flavor.
Water
Extracts juice from the grapes during boiling and dilutes the drink.

The step that matters

Strain through cheesecloth. Straining in stages removes skins, seeds and pulp so the juice stays clear. Leftover solids can cloud the juice and cause spoilage.
