Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Ground round steak
Provides the main body of the loaf and its meaty texture.
Fresh bread crumbs
Absorb moisture and help the loaf hold its shape while baking.
Milk
Adds moisture and keeps the loaf tender as it cooks.
Egg
Binds the mixture so it sets into a sliceable loaf.
Ground fat salt pork
Adds fat that keeps the loaf juicy and rich in flavor.

The step that matters

Placing the bread pan in a larger pan of water. The water bath moderates the oven heat so the loaf cooks gently and evenly, helping prevent a dry, tough edge and a cracked, overcooked surface.

Swap the sage

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (pork, bread, milk, egg, butter, onion):

  1. Garlicfits better
  2. Nutmegfits better
  3. Thymefits about as well
  4. Sagethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against pork, bread, milk, egg, butter, onion. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
