What each ingredient does

Fresh unslacked lime
Reacts with water to release alkaline calcium compounds that dissolve into the liquid, giving lime water its character.
Hot water
Acts as the solvent that takes up the dissolved lime, and warmth speeds the dissolving.

The step that matters

Carefully bottle the clear liquid. Undissolved lime particles settle as sediment at the bottom. Disturbing or pouring too far down the vessel stirs them back up and clouds the liquid, so pour off only the clear top layer.
