Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Sardines
Provide the main fish flesh that cooks through in its paper wrap.
Oiled butter
Adds fat and moisture so the fish stays juicy while it heats.
Chopped mushrooms
Add moisture and savoury depth to the filling around the fish.
Toasted bread
Soaks up juices from the wraps and gives a crisp base to serve on.

The step that matters

Wrapping in buttered paper and twisting the ends. The sealed paper traps steam and juices so the sardines cook gently in their own moisture. A loose or torn wrap lets juices escape and the fish can dry out in the oven.

Swap the parsley

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, pepper, mushroom, bread):

  1. Thymefits about as well
  2. Parsleythe original
  3. Marjoramfits about as well
  4. Sagefits less well

Fit is the average pairing score against butter, pepper, mushroom, bread. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
