Turkey and Dressing

Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 300°F (150°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

Prepare

  1. Preheat the oven to 300°F (150°C).

  2. Clean and wash the turkey thoroughly.

  3. Season the inside of the turkey with salt and pepper.

Make the dressing

  1. In a frying pan, melt the butter and sauté the chopped onion until soft but not browned.

  2. Stir in the crumbled bread, salt, and pepper; heat thoroughly.

  3. Fill the turkey with the bread mixture.

Roast

  1. Place the turkey in a roasting pan, season the outside with salt and pepper, and dredge with flour.

  2. Pour water over the turkey and bake for 2½ to 3 hours, starting at a low temperature.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Turkey
Forms the main body of the dish and carries the stuffing while it roasts.
Stale bread
Absorbs the butter and onion flavour to form a moist, savoury dressing.
Butter
Adds fat and richness, carrying flavour into the onion and bread mixture.
Onion
Adds aroma and savoury depth when softened in the butter.
Flour
Dredged over the outside of the turkey to help the skin brown.

The step that matters

Season the inside of the turkey with salt and pepper. The stuffing is packed inside the bird and heats slowly, so seasoning the cavity lightly helps the dressing taste evenly seasoned rather than bland.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (turkey, bread, egg, butter, pepper, flour):
