What each ingredient does

Cooked chicken
Forms the main body of the salad, providing protein and bulk for the texture.
White celery
Adds crisp texture and a fresh, mild crunch that contrasts with the soft chicken.
Hard boiled eggs
Add richness and a soft, creamy texture to the salad.
Mayonnaise dressing
Adds fat and moisture, binding the salad and keeping the chicken tender.
Lemon juice
Adds acidity that brightens the flavor and balances the richness of the mayonnaise.
Vinegar
Adds sharp acidity that sharpens the flavor and cuts through the richness.

The step that matters

Refrigerate before adding the mayonnaise. Mixing in mayonnaise at the end, after chilling, keeps the salad moist without making it watery or greasy. Adding it too early can thin the dressing as the chicken and celery release liquid.

Swap the white pepper

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (chicken, celery, egg, vinegar, lemon, lettuce):

  1. Tarragonfits better
  2. Parsleyfits better
  3. Dillfits better
  4. White pepperthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against chicken, celery, egg, vinegar, lemon, lettuce. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
