Cinnamon Rolls

Ingredients

Directions

The book says “a quick oven”. The 400°F (200°C) in the steps is the modern equivalent, not the book's own figure.

Prepare

  1. Roll the Parker House dough to ½ inch thick.

  2. Spread a thin layer of melted butter, cinnamon, and currants over the dough.

  3. Roll up the dough like a jelly roll.

  4. Cut the roll into 1‑inch thick slices.

Shape and bake

  1. Place the slices on a well‑greased pan, 1 inch apart.

  2. Sprinkle the tops with a little powdered sugar.

  3. Let the rolls rise in the pans until doubled in size.

  4. Bake in a preheated oven at 400°F (200°C) for 15 minutes.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Parker house dough
Forms the soft, rolled structure that rises and holds the filling.
Melted butter
Adds richness and moisture to the filling and helps the rolls brown.
Cinnamon
Gives the filling its warm, aromatic flavour.
Currants
Add small pockets of sweetness and chew within the spiral.

The step that matters

Let the rolls rise until doubled in size. Yeast dough needs enough proofing to expand fully; under-proofed rolls bake up dense, while the gas trapped in the dough gives a light, open crumb.

Swap the currant

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, cinnamon, sugar):

  1. Vanillafits better
  2. Raisinfits better
  3. Figfits better
  4. Currantthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against butter, cinnamon, sugar. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
