  2. Remove the cakes to a hot platter.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Round steak
Provides the meat that forms the body of the cakes.
Egg
Binds the ground meat so the cakes hold their shape.
Flour
Dredging coat that helps the cakes brown well in the pan.
Butter
Fat for sautéing that browns the cakes and adds flavor.

The step that matters

Sautéing the cakes until browned on both sides. Searing in hot fat builds browning and flavor on the surface. If the pan is not hot enough, the cakes steam and turn grey instead of browning.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (pepper, egg, flour, butter, mushroom):

  1. Shallotfits better
  2. Spinachfits better
  3. Chivefits better
  4. Onionthe original
