Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Vanilla ice cream
Forms the creamy base and sweetness of all three layers.
Baker's chocolate
Adds bitter chocolate flavor and fat to the middle layer.
Almond extract
Adds a strong aroma to the green layer, since it is concentrated flavor.

The step that matters

Pack the flavored ice cream smoothly over the chocolate layer. Smooth, firm packing removes air pockets and keeps the layers distinct, so the colors do not blend and the slices hold their shape when frozen.

Swap the almond

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (vanilla, cream, chocolate):

  1. Hazelnutfits about as well
  2. Almondthe original
  3. Chestnutfits about as well
  4. Macadamia nutfits less well

Fit is the average pairing score against vanilla, cream, chocolate. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
