What each ingredient does

Peas
Provide the main body and sweet, green flavor of the dish.
Carrots
Add sweetness, color and a firmer bite than the peas.
Butter
Adds richness and a silky coating that carries flavor across the vegetables.

The step that matters

Boil the peas until half done before adding the carrots. Carrots take longer to soften than peas. Adding them together without timing can leave the carrots firm or the peas overcooked and mushy.

Swap the peas

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (carrot, butter, parsley, pepper):

  1. Chickpeafits better
  2. Beansfits better
  3. Lentilsfits better
  4. Peasthe original
