Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Pearl barley
Provides the main body and starchy base of the gruel as it simmers.
Mixed flour
Thickens the liquid so the gruel becomes smooth and spoonable.
Butter
Adds richness and a smooth mouthfeel to the finished gruel.
Milk sugar
Adds gentle sweetness and a mild, milky flavour.

The step that matters

Adding the barley gruel to the butter and flour mixture. Adding the liquid gradually while stirring keeps the flour dispersed, so lumps do not form and the gruel thickens evenly.
