Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Tomatoes
Provide the main body and tangy flavor of the jelly.
Gelatin
Sets the cooked tomato mixture into a firm, sliceable jelly as it cools.
Celery
Adds aromatic, savory flavor to the tomato base.

The step that matters

Stir in the gelatin until fully dissolved. Gelatin must dissolve completely in the warm mixture; undissolved granules leave gritty spots and uneven setting. Cooling only slightly before adding it keeps the gelatin liquid and evenly distributed.

Swap the mace

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (tomato, celery, onion, pepper, gelatin):

  1. Thymefits better
  2. Parsleyfits better
  3. Tarragonfits better
  4. Macethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against tomato, celery, onion, pepper, gelatin. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
