Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Cabbage
Forms the bulk of the dish and softens as it cooks until tender.
Milk
Simmers down to a creamy coating that adds richness and mild sweetness.
Butter
Adds fat and a rich, smooth finish stirred in at the end.

The step that matters

Simmer until the milk is mostly absorbed. Simmering gently lets the milk reduce and coat the cabbage without scorching or curdling. Stopping too early leaves the dish watery, while cooking too hard can make the milk catch on the pan and turn the cabbage dry.

Swap the mace

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (cabbage, milk, pepper, butter):

  1. Parsleyfits better
  2. Cinnamonfits better
  3. Thymefits better
  4. Macethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against cabbage, milk, pepper, butter. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
