Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Rump beef
Provides the main meat, which becomes tender through long, moist cooking.
Suet
Adds fat for searing, helping brown the meat surface.
Boiling water
Creates moist cooking liquid that braises the beef and forms the base of the gravy.
Cloves
Adds warm, aromatic flavor to the cooking liquid.

The step that matters

Cover and cook for 4 to 5 hours, adding more water as needed. Long, gentle, moist cooking breaks down the tough connective tissue in rump beef. If the liquid runs low, the meat can dry out and scorch on the bottom of the pot, so water must be topped up.

Swap the clove

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (beef, pepper):

  1. Rosemaryfits better
  2. Parsleyfits better
  3. Marjoramfits better
  4. Clovethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against beef, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
