Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 350°F (175°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

Prepare

  1. Cut the corn off the ears.

Layer and bake

  1. Place a layer of corn in the bottom of a baking dish.

  2. Add a layer of bread crumbs, butter, salt, and pepper.

  3. Continue layering corn and crumbs with seasoning until the dish is full.

  4. Pour enough milk over the top to cover it.

  5. Bake at 350°F (175°C) until set.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Corn
Provides the main body and sweet flavour of the dish.
Bread crumbs
Absorb the milk and help give the baked dish a firmer, sliceable structure.
Milk
Provides the liquid that sets into a custard-like texture as the dish bakes.
Butter
Adds richness and helps the top of the crumbs brown in the oven.

The step that matters

Pouring the milk over the top. The milk must cover the layers so the crumbs can soak it up evenly; dry spots stay firm while the milk proteins set during baking, giving an uneven texture.
