The flavor team

The pairs that carry this dish. Each one is judged two ways: how much their aromas overlap, and how often cooks already put them together.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Strawberry juice
Provides the main flavour and liquid base that thickens into the sponge.
Egg whites
Whipped to stiff foam, they trap air and give the sponge its light structure.
Thick cream
Whipped to a froth, it adds richness and helps keep the sponge soft and airy.

The step that matters

Whisking the egg whites and cream into the juice. Folding gently preserves the air bubbles in the whipped egg whites and cream. Overmixing or deflating them makes the sponge dense instead of light and spongy.

Swap the strawberry

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (egg, cream):

  1. Vanillafits better
  2. Raspberryfits about as well
  3. Strawberrythe original
  4. Coconutfits less well

Fit is the average pairing score against egg, cream. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
