Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Barley
Thickens the broth as its starch releases during long simmering, giving body to the soup.
Beef stock
Forms the savory liquid base that carries the flavor of the whole soup.
Cabbage
Adds bulk and a mild sweetness as it softens during the long simmer.
Potatoes
Soften and release starch, adding body and making the soup heartier.

The step that matters

Boil gently for 1 hour or until the vegetables are tender. A gentle simmer cooks the vegetables evenly and keeps them intact, while a hard boil breaks them down and clouds the broth.

Swap the cabbage
