Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Spinach
Forms the body and green colour of the soup and supplies its earthy flavour.
Milk
Provides the liquid base and creamy richness of the soup.
Flour
Thickens the soup as it heats, giving it a smooth, body-rich texture.
Butter
Adds fat that carries flavour and rounds out the texture of the soup.

The step that matters

Stir constantly until the soup reaches boiling point. Flour mixed into hot milk can clump and scorch on the bottom if not stirred. Constant stirring keeps the starch dispersed so the soup thickens smoothly.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (spinach, milk, flour, butter, celery, pepper):

  1. Leekfits better
  2. Carrotfits better
