Why it works: Milk and butter are a kitchen classic. They rank in the top 7% of all ingredient pairs, and cooks put them together in 81,283 recipes. Both carry (z)-4-heptenal, which smells biscuit, cream. The science ↓
Nut Loaf
Ingredients
Directions
The book says “a slow oven”. The 300°F (150°C) in the steps is the modern equivalent, not the book's own figure.
Prepare
Preheat the oven to 300°F (150°C).
In a bowl, mix together the sugar, sweet milk, chopped walnuts, egg, flour, baking powder, and butter.
Pour the mixture into a greased pan and let it stand for 20 minutes.
Bake and serve
Bake in the preheated oven for 30 to 60 minutes.
Once cooled, slice thin and place Swiss cheese between the slices.
Serve with butter sauce or mustard sauce.
Transcribed from a scanned cookbook and modernised for today's kitchens. Where the book gave no heat or time, or said "a moderate oven", the temperatures and times here may be modern equivalents rather than the book's own figures.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs
What each ingredient does
- Flour
- Provides the main structure that holds the loaf together as it bakes.
- Egg
- Binds the batter and helps set the crumb as it bakes.
- Baking powder
- Releases gas during baking so the loaf rises and becomes lighter.
- Walnuts
- Add texture and a rich, toasty flavor to the loaf.
- Sugar
- Adds sweetness and helps the crust brown during baking.
