What each ingredient does

Ground coffee
Provides the main coffee flavor and aroma that the hot water draws out.
Boiling water
Acts as the solvent that dissolves flavor compounds from the grounds.

The step that matters

Pour into cups without shaking the grounds. Fine coffee grounds settle to the bottom while the liquid rests. Shaking or stirring them back up makes the cup cloudy and gritty, and it can bring out bitterness.
