Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Eggs
Yolks thicken the base and whites, whipped, add lightness and airy texture.
Cream
Whipped cream adds richness and a light, fluffy body.
Sugar
Sweetens the base and helps stabilise the beaten yolks.
Liquor
Adds aroma and flavour; alcohol contributes to the drink's character.

The step that matters

Folding in the whipped cream and egg whites. Whipped cream and egg whites trap air in foam. Folding gently, rather than stirring, keeps that air in, so the eggnog stays light instead of deflating.

Swap the nutmeg

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (egg, cream, sugar, brandy, rum):

  1. Nutmegthe original
  2. Cinnamonfits about as well
  3. Gingerfits less well
  4. Allspicefits less well

Fit is the average pairing score against egg, cream, sugar, brandy, rum. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
