Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Cabbage
Forms the bulk of the garnish and gives its body and mild sweetness once cooked.
Butter
Adds fat and richness, carrying the flavour of the dish.
All-purpose flour
Thickens the sauce as it cooks with the broth.
Broth
Provides the liquid that turns the cabbage and flour into a sauce and adds savoury flavour.

The step that matters

Adding the broth gradually while stirring. Adding liquid slowly while stirring keeps the flour smoothly dispersed, preventing lumps so the sauce thickens evenly.

Swap the cabbage
