Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Corned beef
Provides the main meat, which becomes tender through long, slow simmering.
Potatoes
Serve as a starchy side that soaks up the savory cooking liquid.
Cabbage
Adds mild sweetness and body as a boiled vegetable side.

The step that matters

Keep the boil slow. Once the water boils, skimming foam and holding a gentle simmer keeps the meat from toughening and the broth clear. A hard boil forces muscle fibers to contract and can break the meat apart.

Swap the cabbage

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (beef, potato, turnip, parsnip, carrot):

  1. Leekfits better
  2. Beetrootfits better
  3. Chivefits better
  4. Cabbagethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against beef, potato, turnip, parsnip, carrot. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
