Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Summer squash
Forms the edible shell that holds the stuffing and softens as it cooks.
Bread crumbs
Absorb the melted butter and form a light, binding stuffing that holds its shape.
Butter
Adds richness and moisture and helps the stuffing and squash brown in the oven.

The step that matters

Boil or steam the squash until tender, being careful not to break it.. Squash that is undercooked stays firm and hard to fill, while overcooked squash becomes watery and tears. Gentle cooking keeps the shell intact to hold the stuffing.
