Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Chicken
The main protein, which firms and turns opaque as its heat rises during roasting.
Butter
Fat that carries heat into the bird, adds richness, and helps the skin brown when basted.

The step that matters

Prick with a fork to check if done.. Poultry must cook fully through, especially at the thickest parts near the bone. Undercooked meat is unsafe, while overcooking dries out the flesh, so checking before serving matters.

Swap the onion

The recipe marks onion as optional. How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (chicken, butter, pepper, lemon):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Potatofits better
  3. Asparagusfits better
  4. Onionthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against chicken, butter, pepper, lemon. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
