Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Onion
Softens into a pulp that thickens the liquid and adds body and mild sweetness.
Prawns
Provide the main protein, and their shells add savoury flavour to the strained liquid.
Curry powder
Supplies the warm spice aroma and the characteristic flavour of the dish.

The step that matters

Simmering the prawns. Prawn protein tightens and turns rubbery when overheated for too long, so the prawns should be simmered only briefly, just until cooked through.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (sauce, rice):

  1. Tomatofits better
  2. Welsh onionfits better
  3. Capsicumfits better
  4. Onionthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against sauce, rice. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
