Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Chicken
Gives the broth its meaty flavour and body as it simmers.
Lean beef
Adds deep meaty flavour and body to the broth.
Carrot
Adds subtle sweetness and aroma to the broth.
Onion
Adds savoury depth and aroma as it simmers with the clove.

The step that matters

Skim the surface well. Bringing the liquid slowly to a boil and skimming removes coagulated proteins and fat that would otherwise cloud the broth and make it greasy.

Swap the clove

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (chicken, beef, carrot, onion, leek, pepper):

  1. Celeryfits better
  2. Thymefits better
  3. Garlicfits better
  4. Clovethe original
