Quintessence of Lavender, or Other Aromatic Herbs
Ingredients
Directions
Remove blossoms from stalks, ensuring they are fresh and cut at sunrise in warm weather.
Spread blossoms on a white linen cloth and let them sit in the shade for 24 hours.
Bruise the blossoms and immerse them in warm water in a still near the fire.
Infuse for 5 to 6 hours, closely covered to prevent evaporation.
Remove the cover and quickly place the helm on, sealing it carefully.
Draw off half the quantity of water used.
Separate the quintessence from the surface of the water.
Return the distilled water and distill again until no more quintessence appears.
Distill the water 4 to 5 times as needed.
