To Boil Asparagus

Ingredients

Directions

Prepare the asparagus

  1. Cut the white ends off the asparagus, about 6 inches from the head, and scrape them clean from the green part downwards.

  2. Soak the scraped asparagus in clean water, then tie them in small, even bundles.

Cook

  1. Bring a pot of water to a boil, then add the asparagus and boil quickly, being careful not to overboil.

  2. Toast a slice of bread until brown on both sides.

  3. Once the asparagus is done, carefully remove it and dip the toast in the asparagus water.

Serve

  1. Place the toast in the bottom of a dish, lay the asparagus heads on top with the white ends outward, and pour a little melted butter over them.

  2. Cut the orange into small quarters and place them between the asparagus for garnish.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Asparagus
The main vegetable, whose tender texture depends on brief, quick boiling.
Bread
Forms a absorbent base that soaks up the asparagus cooking water and butter.
Butter
Adds richness and fat, carrying flavor across the warm asparagus.

The step that matters

Boil quickly and do not overboil. Overcooked asparagus loses its bright green color and becomes soft and dull. Brief, rapid boiling keeps the spears tender-crisp and vivid.

Swap the orange

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (asparagus, bread, butter):

  1. Lemonfits better
  2. Coconutfits better
  3. Figfits better
  4. Orangethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against asparagus, bread, butter. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
