Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Arrowroot
Thickens the liquid into a smooth gruel as it boils and cools.
Apples
Add natural sweetness, body and fruity flavor to the liquid.
Milk
Adds richness and creaminess to the gruel.
Cinnamon stick
Infuses warm, aromatic spice flavor into the simmering liquid.

The step that matters

Mix the arrowroot with cold liquid before adding it to the pot. Starch clumps when it hits hot liquid directly. Dispersing arrowroot in cold liquid first lets the starch separate and thicken evenly once heated.

Swap the lemon

The recipe marks lemon as optional. How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (arrowroot, milk, cinnamon, apple, honey, butter):

  1. Vanillafits better
  2. Figfits better
  3. Peachfits better
