Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Breast of veal
Provides the meat and gelatin-rich body that flavours the soup and becomes tender with simmering.
Onions
Soften and brown in butter, adding sweetness and savoury depth to the soup base.
Curry powder
Supplies the main spiced aroma and flavour that defines the soup.
Flour
Mixed with cold water and stirred in, it thickens the soup slightly.

The step that matters

Mixing flour and curry powder with cold water before adding. Flour stirred in dry or added hot clumps and stays raw-tasting; a smooth cold slurry disperses evenly, and the starch then thickens the liquid as it heats.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (veal, corn, pepper, allspice, butter, flour):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Carrotfits better
