Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 400°F (200°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

Prepare the beef

  1. Cut the beef into ½ inch thick steaks.

  2. Beat the steaks lightly with a rolling pin.

  3. Season with pepper, salt, and minced onion.

Assemble and bake

  1. Roll up the steaks and pack them neatly into a dish or lay them in slices.

  2. Add spoonfuls of gravy and vinegar.

  3. Cover the pie with puff pastry and bake at 400°F (200°C) for 1 hour.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Beef
Forms the main body of the pie and provides meaty flavour and chewy texture when cooked slowly.
Puff pastry
Forms a flaky, golden crust that seals and covers the filling while baking.
Gravy
Adds moisture and savoury flavour so the beef stays juicy inside the pie.
Onion
Adds savoury sweetness and aroma to the seasoning around the beef.

The step that matters

Roll up the steaks and pack them neatly. Tightly packed, evenly arranged steaks cook at a similar rate and help the pie hold together when served. Loose or uneven packing can leave some pieces underdone or dry.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (beef, pepper, vinegar):

  1. Capsicumfits better
  2. Tomatofits about as well
  3. Onionthe original
  4. Mustardfits about as well

Fit is the average pairing score against beef, pepper, vinegar. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
